The Process of Shower Building
-
From Start
We started with a really hefty shower build that was done sometime in the late 90s. This enclosure was serious! We had a snail shower and platform jacuzzi tub wrapped in Travertine tile that was built to withstand a bomb. We tore it down to the studs and redesigned the enclosure to maximize the volumetric space of the bathroom and incorporate modern finishes to complete this bathroom remodel

To Finish
We finished strong with a unique Wet Area build that incorporates a classic look with an open and spacious modern shower system. Our goal was to maximize both the shower and freestanding tub functional space together in a defined waterproofed area that we designate as the Wet Area. We will take you thru the steps to build this Wet Area and what products we used in our design.

Demo and Plumbing
This is a great example of the kinds of surprises that you find when opening up walls. In our case, it was opening up the jacuzzi tub platform. Luckily the subfloor and wall studs were in excellent shape. When all was said and done, we removed 2,800 LBS of debris from this Wet Area

Framing and Rough In
Plumbing Rough In was challenging on this build because of how the water supply was sent to the old jacuzzi tub. We started by creating a PEX-Copper connection on the hot and cold water supply lines feeding the wet area. We incorporated PEX to route the plumbing thru the floor joist and connect to the new floor valve that will service the free standing tub. We used a Delta Faucet Floor-Mount Freestanding Tub Filler Rough-In Valve for the tub and we used a Delta Multi-Choice Valve Body for the Shower Faucet. We relocated both the tub and shower drain to a new location. We got creative with this layout and framed in a bench that will service both the Shower enclosure and the Tub area.

Waterproofing
This shower is on the second story so we waterproofed the hell out of it! We used Schlueter Ditra waterproofing and uncoupling membrane on the floor of the wet area. For the shower enclosure we used our tried and true method of Rubber shower pan liner, hand formed mud pan, Hardibacker shower walls coated in 3 coats of RedGuard mastic membrane. We used mold resistant drywall on the walls of the wet area and we coated those walls in 2 coats to help protect against the moisture in the air of the Wet Area.

Tile, Trim, Glass, and Fixtures
This is when the project starts to come together. We went bold with the tile choice here, we utilized a Spanish screen printed ceramic tile from Esenzia called Note. This product is supplied by Floor and Decor. To give some depth to the area we did a contrasting deco band around the wall with another screen printed ceramic tile from Esenzia called Blanco. These tile are 6”x12” and we stacked a classic subway pattern. The floor is created with San GiorgioCalacatta Oro II Ceramic Hexagon Mosaic supplied by Floor and Decor. For the tub faucet we went with a Delta Cassidy and for the shower handle kit we went with a matching chrome Delta Cassidy Monitor(R) 17 Series. I highly recommend this shower valve kit because it allows for both volume and temperature shower controls in 1 handle.
